Adirondack Eats: Tail O’ The Pup

If the big bold sign doesn’t grab your attention then the traffic pulling in and out of the parking area will slow you down.

Tail O’ the Pup — Raybrook, New York

Nestled halfway between Saranac Lake and Lake Placid along route 86 in Raybrook, New York you’ll find Tail O’ The Pup, a classic roadside eatery.

Since 1927, this family restaurant has been a popular roadside stop for families, sports teams, tourists, bikers and hikers like us.

As we travel through the area we like to drop-in for the laid-back outdoor atmosphere, grab a bite and a drink while listening to the live music.

Dancing anyone?

Can you guess what you’ll find on the menu from this sign?

We like it best when there are a gazillion other customers here. The service might be slow when it’s crowded, but we sit back and enjoy our cold drinks while being entertained watching the parade of Harley-Davidson and leather-clad riders coming and going.

There is an indoor place to eat, but we prefer the red picnic tables under the striped red and white tents. Depending on the sporting tournaments taking place in nearby Lake Placid, you’ll most likely be seated among rugby, lacrosse, soccer or hockey players. A loud sort as they celebrate their wins and losses.

House specialties are, steamed Maine Lobster and smoked or grilled meat of your choice.

For those who want it all, don’t miss the BBQ Lovers Special; Chicken, Ribs, Beef Brisket and Pulled Pork.

If you’re looking for a fine restaurant this isn’t it! Take it for what it is — and enjoy the unique atmosphere.

Patio season is coming to a close and so will the Tail O’ The Pup, reopening in May. With this year’s Indian summer forecast, we may have a few more days to linger outdoors. On your next Adirondack road-trip stop by for a cold drink.

This Adirondack icon is worth a visit.

  1. Hey Ginette. Tail of the pup is about 5 minutes from our place. Make sure you connect the next time you are in the neighbourhood

  2. Hey guys! Last time we were traveling through Placid we stumbled on this place. Sadly we never had the opportunity to stop. This summer we are headed back to Placid so my oldest son and I can hike Whiteface, our first high peak. Tail O the Pup is on our list.

    • Hi ADKJoe, thanks for stopping by our blog. If you and your son are aspiring Adirondack 46ers we suggest you plan to hike Ester at the same time as Whiteface…it can easily be included and would not add much time to your day. We’ve posted about this hike … and then celebrate your hike at Tail ‘O the Pup!

We love to hear from you!
